The opening night of the 2020 Republican National Convention blew last week’s Democratic snoozefest out of the water, drawing in nearly six times more viewers on C-SPAN’s livestream, New York Post reports.
Approximately 440,000 people tuned in to watch the first night of the virtual GOP convention on Monday, compared to just 76,000 views for the first night of the DNC, according to reporter Joe Concha at The Hill.
According to Nielsen, 18.7 million people tuned in to the first night of the virtual Democratic convention from Milwaukee and Wilmington, Del., on Aug. 17, which featured speeches from former first lady Michelle Obama and former Ohio Gov. John Kasich (R).

FNC’s delivery set a record for the highest-rated first night of an RNC in television history.
Between the hours of 10 and 11 p.m. ET, Fox was far out in first place, followed by CNN, which drew a total audience of 2.009 million viewers. ABC was third with 1.978 million viewers, followed by NBC Broadcast (1.740 million), MSNBC (1.570 million), and CBS (1.479 million).
Among viewers 25-54, the demographic group most valued by advertisers, FNC was first with 1.572 million viewers, followed by CNN (606,000 viewers), NBC Broadcast (541,000 viewers), ABC (521,000 viewers), CBS (424,000 viewers) and MSNBC (308,000 viewers).
Last week’s 2020 Democratic National Convention tanked in the Nielsen ratings compared to the 2016 opening festivities where Hillary Clinton was crowned the nation’s first female presidential nominee.
Viewership was down as much as 42 percent on the broadcast networks CBS, NBC and ABC.
Most of the networks, including Fox, ABC and CNN, still averaged 18.68 million viewers.
The numbers at the end of the week will bring further clarity, but Republicans are off to a great start.
