On his own program, “Real Time With Bill Maher,” the left-wing host called the anti-Israel Boycott, Divestment and Sanctions (BDS) crusade “a bullshit purity test.” This isn’t the first time Maher has gone off the reservation concerning Muslims.
Four years ago, while interviewing Charlie Rose, he quoted Pew research to back up his claim that a large majority of Muslims condone violence based on their religious beliefs, and most Christians do not. Over eighty percent surveyed believed it was permissible to stone adulterers, and kill people who leave the faith.
Rashida Tlaib was quick to criticize Maher on Twitter, calling for a boycott of his show.“I am tired of folks discrediting a form of speech that is centered on equality and freedom. This is exactly how they tried to discredit & stop the boycott to stand up against the apartheid in S. Africa. It didn’t work then and it won’t now.”
Reactions by Tlaib’s Twitter followers was mixed, but decidedly critical. One follower thought it ironic that a member of Congress was calling for the silencing of a journalist (we can argue her definition of Maher’s journo creds at a later date)!
Should be an interesting week.
